Seven Straight for Mat Mladin at Barber Motorsports

Chino, Calif. - May 4, 2009 - The double-header weekend marked the first race for the 2009 GSX-R1000 at the beautiful Barber Motorsports in Birmingham, Alabama. After severe weather and some strong competition, six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin (#7) added two more victories to his record, making it a perfect 7 wins for the 7 races held so far in the 2009 AMA Superbike series.

Mladin started Saturday’s race from the pole, with Blake Young qualifying in second and Tommy Hayden fifth. At the end of the first lap, however, it was Young at the front of the pack after a fourth place start by Mladin. The rookie’s time at the front wouldn’t last long, however, as Mladin set his sights on the front and moved into the lead shortly thereafter. As Mladin powered on to his sixth race win on the season, Young was involved in a race-long battle for second place, using his skill and the all-new Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki GSX-R1000 to secure the position. Tommy Hayden managed to improve from his qualifying spot and finished with a strong fourth place.

"At the start of the race, the boys were having a bit of a go and I was trying to get a feel for the new 2009 Suzuki with a full tank of gas and a few laps in,” said Mladin after his 78th victory. “I had a bit of a look at what the other guys were doing and made my way through. I just tried to keep it solid, but tried not to wear too much stuff out, because we really didn't know what the bike was capable of doing or what it was going to do to the tires. This motorcycle, as far as a GSX-R1000 goes, is very, very different to any other one we've ever had. It's a very different motorbike."

Sunday’s race was nearly the same as Saturday’s. Mladin started from the pole again but found himself in second place as they completed the opening lap. By the time the second lap began, however, it was Mladin in the lead. Mladin would go on to win the race, while Tommy Hayden would cross the line in eighth. Hayden was one of many riders who struggled on the damp track. Blake Young appeared to be following Mladin to the front when he came together with another rider and fell, possibly injuring his hand. More information will be issued later regarding the extent of Young's injury, if any.

Mladin now has a 77-point advantage over teammate Tommy Hayden in the championship. The next stop for the series is Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, May 15-17.
