Mladin and Young Take Podium at Laguna Seca

Chino, Calif. - July 6, 2009 - The US Grand Prix weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, California was the scene of another fantastic finish for the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team, though not without some bumps along the way. Championship points leader Mat Mladin (#7) claimed his tenth win of the season, while the impressive rookie Blake Young (#79) took the second spot on the podium. Tommy Hayden (#22), after setting a strong pace in practice and qualifying, was given an unfortunate ride through penalty after jumping the start.

Though the AMA Superbike series shared the weekend with the MotoGP series, the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team avoided any distractions. By the time qualifying had ended, the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki GSX-R1000s of Mladin, Young and Hayden, respectively, had secured the top three spots.

On Sunday, however, things didnít go as smoothly. Hayden, who jumped the start, was given a ride-through penalty. Race direction, however, restarted the race. Mladin and Young led the field from the start, but were unaware of a collision that had occurred in turn two. As they completed the lap and returned to the turn two area, the safety car, as well as debris, stood in the racetrack. After a tense moment that saw the leaders narrowly avoid another collision, the race was red flagged.

The final restart would be incident-free. Blake Young had powered to the front of the pack by the end of the first lap, while Mladin had fallen back to sixth. But quickly and methodically, as the six-time AMA Superbike Champion has done so many times in the past, Mladin made his way through those in front of him until he was right behind his teammate. On lap 11, Mladin made one more pass that would stick to the finish with a 1.642 second lead.

"I think that's probably the most amount of laps I've led so far in a Superbike race, so it felt really good. The crew worked really hard for me this weekend. I really want to thank them,Ē said the enthusiastic Young after arguably one of his best finishes of the season.

Mladin was equally pleased with the race. "It was obviously a good race for us today. Most importantly, it's great to have the three Suzukis up here. That's what we're here to do is to try and get a Suzuki on top of the box. Today, it was good to fill the podium."

The series now takes a short break as they gear up for the doubleheader weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, July 17-19.
