Chino, Calif. - August 17, 2009 - All the hard work through the season finally paid off for veteran Mat Mladin at the scenic Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. Mladin, riding aboard the #7 Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki/Yoshimura GSX-R1000, rode two conservative races to bring home his outstanding seventh AMA Superbike title. Tommy Hayden (#22), second in the championship to Mladin, put in two great finishes, but they were not enough to keep Mladin from the number one plate. Blake Young (#79) also had strong results in his terrific rookie year.

After a fast qualifying session, Mladin started Saturday’s race from second-place on the grid. When the lights went green, he got off the line safely and finished out the race right where he started. Tommy Hayden, however, had to work his way up after a slow start. He had to stay close to Mladin if he wanted to keep his championship hopes alive, and did just that. After a close battle with teammate Blake Young, Hayden made a move on the last lap and secured fifth position – just enough to push the championship fight on to Sunday’s race.

The second race of the double-header weekend saw Mladin again start from the second spot on the grid. He held the lead briefly after a fantastic start, but elected to play it safe and let his seventh championship come to him. Taking the conservative approach, Mladin coasted to the finish line in 9th place, more than enough to win the title. Hayden gave it everything he could from the start and rode to a fantastic second place, but it wasn’t enough to keep his title hopes alive. Blake Young, after a good showing in Saturday’s race, crossed the line in seventh place.

For Mladin, who announced his retirement at the end of the season, he has one race left in his career: the final round of the AMA Superbike championship, which takes place September 4-6 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ.
