Chino, Calif. - August 3, 2009 - Heartland Park Topeka was the site of the ninth round of the AMA Superbike Championship. Rockstar / Makita / Suzuki riders Blake Young (#79) and Tommy Hayden (#22) both enjoyed strong podium finishes, while current points leader Mat Mladin (#7) elected not to race due to safety concerns about the track.

Young and Hayden struggled in qualifying after a lack of track time, and would line up for Saturday’s race in 7th and 8th, respectively. The qualifying positions did little to keep the two Rockstar / Makita / Suzuki riders from the front, though. Young got a great start and ran in the top three for much of the race. Hayden, meanwhile, cut through the pack from eighth, finding himself right behind teammate Young. At the races end, Young crossed the line in third with Hayden right behind him in fourth.

Sunday’s race again saw both Rockstar / Makita / Suzuki riders at the front. By the second lap of the race, Young was in second with Hayden right behind him. Young, however, ran off track, handing the position to his teammate. Hayden made the most of the position, challenging for the lead throughout the entire race. Ultimately, however, Hayden would have to settle for a hard-earned second place, while Young recovered from a distant tenth, to finish a respectable eighth.

Although he didn’t race this weekend, Mat Mladin still holds a sizeable points lead over Tommy Hayden, 380 to 307, with just two rounds left. Mladin and the rest of the Rockstar / Makita / Suzuki team will be in action August 14-16 at VIR Raceway in Alton, Virginia.
